simplicity simply the best sewing bookHands up – who’d love to welcome the addition of a shiny new sewing book to their collection? Thanks to the lovely people over at Simplicity I can help you with just that! The Simplicity Simply the Best Sewing Book is a must-have for all seamstresses – whether you’re just starting out or need a reference guide to look back over as you complete more advanced projects.

The book contains pages and pages of information on how to carry out various sewing techniques, including inserting a sleeve, creating a cuff, working with lace, doing French seams, getting the fit right, sewing with satin and silk, washing fabric, choosing an overlocker… literally everything you can think of. It sure is the Essential Reference for all Home Sewers!

Here are a few snapshots of what’s inside the book (it’s hardback and ring-bound too so no matter how much you use it, fold over the corners or use it as a straight edge for pattern drafting it’ll withstand the test of time!) simplicity book So would you like to win a copy?   1. My latest project is vogue 7435 a beautiful little dress for one of my granddaughters. My very first attempt at smocking which I am really enjoying. I bought some beautiful material from their nibs with a fairy and toadstool design. Can’t wait to finish it and see her wearing it 🙂

  6. My current project is using up some of my scraps. I’ve sewn together left-over thin strips of fabric from a quilt top, cut 4 and half inch squares out of it and am sewing them together (with bits of felt for beak, tail etc.) to make chicken pincushions. They are for gifts and I’ve made two already, two more to go.

  7. im currently working on a floor cushion – upcycling an old futon cushion pad using some John Lewis screen printed fabric and I am going to dabble using my own pattern! I have also just made my first 2 skirts and I am sure I will start on a 3rd very very soon 😀

  12. Currently a few boring jobs! Taking up a super long high street maxi dress (who are they made for???) I’ve had to take off a few inches so going to make the offcut into a thin scarf to wear as a hairband sort of thing with the dress. My Mum wants me to take up some trews too. After that, it’s a case of decide to finish the skirt that I unearthed half done some time ago or start on Simplicity 2444. Decisions, decisions! Also bit tricky at the moment as the room I sew in is having a bit of a major overhaul so all a bit of a mess. Hopefully be worth it in the end 🙂

    • haha oh I’m glad it’s not just me who has that problem with maxi dresses! when the hanger in the shop is above my head and the dress reaches the floor I do wonder who’s actually that tall! you sound like you’ve got plenty of sewing to be getting on with 🙂

      • Definitely not just you! I worked out that by the amount I had to take off to leave it at my ankles (I wear them long!) you’d need to be about 6ft tall to wear it ‘as is’! :/

  13. This is not an entry as I live on the opposite side of the globe, but I would have resisted anyway. I recently broke the shelf above my sewing desk from the weight of too many craft books. I am taking it as a sign. Good luck to everyone else!
    (I too always hem maxi dresses. I have tall friends, so I don’t mind. I know it is easier to cut fabric off than magically add it on. 🙂 )

  14. Oooo I’d love to win this! I’m currently making my first ever dress, with a little help from my Mum. It’s a vintage pattern from Sew La Di Da and last weekend I finally sewed in the invisible zip, with only a few minor hiccups. 🙂 Great competition Louise! Leanne x

    • I told you it’d be something you’d like! Well done on your invisible zip – they cause me no end of problems haha. I’ve done so many and it’s taken me until last weekend to finally sew one in the right way round first time!

  18. Currently I am attempting the first pattern which doesn’t have ‘easy’ or ‘2 hour’ on the front! It is simplicity 2247 & has loads of techniques included which I never tried before! I have a lovely flowery vintage fabric which was quite pricey but is lovely. Hopefully it will be finished (& wearable) in time for the hot summer(?)!

    • Ooh I remember that step of choosing a non-‘easy’ pattern! I’ve made quite a few things now but every time I start a project I learn lots of new techniques or improve on ones I’ve already learnt. Trial and error is the best method!

  19. I’m currently making a quilted cushion in a pin-wheel design. It’s a bit fiddly as I’m still a novice at sewing. I’m making plans to make some pyjamas soon thanks to some success at my first item made from a proper pattern – an apron.

  20. My current project is putting a lining into a RTW jacket for my mother so it doesn’t snag on her top. Having cut it out I’m racing to put it together before the horrible slippy stuff frays past the seam lines. Send help!

  24. Hi! My cousin asked me to make her her formal dress. Using a vogue pattern for stretch fabric. V front and backless. Have made a mockup with a beautiful dogtooth fabric. Now doing the real thing with a beautiful stretch black velvet 🙂

  25. Gosh, what am I not currently working on? With a busy toddler I feel like most of my projects for myself never get passed half way! But my main current project is a 50s style nursing tea dress of my own design which I’m pretty excited about 🙂
